BlackBerry 8820 review

2008-03-02 18:34:39

This is the newest product of the Research in motion company. The Blackberry 8820 model is alike to its forebear, the 8800 model.

BlackBerry 8820

The device comes in black and silver box combination, and the shape of the whole device is also very similar to 8800. It is a quite large gadget, with the dimensions of 114x66x14mm, and it weights 134 g.

The front side of the device contains a large screen and a full QWERTY keyboard. The screen is a TFT active matrix with the resolution of 320x240, that shows 64 thousand colors.

It is quite OK. The picture on it looks good, sharp and clear, but considering the new screens on mobile phones that show up to 16 million of colors, maybe the RIM should have to consider adding more colors to their devices.

The keyboard is of course, a full QWERTY one. It contains 35 standard keys, a navigation key, and four more keys left and right from it.

The keys are very tactile and precise, and writing shouldn't be a problem for anyone.

One thing that the 8820 model lacks of is a camera. The earlier models had a camera, but RIM decided that the 8820 doesn't need one. Another thing diferencing this model from its forebears is that the 8820 now has Wi-Fi.

The device works on a BlackBerry Handheld Software operating system. It is quite fast in installing and running applications.

Regarding the applications, 8820 is full of useful applications that will satisfy both general and business users. Wi-Fi enables users to access email, Instant Messaging, organizer, web browsing and other mobile data applications.

Internet browsing is really a thrill on this device, and it also has a very good e-mail client. The device uses USB and Bluetooth also, and it has GPS.

8820 has 64 MB of flash internal memory which can be expanded with microSD cards thanks to the card slot located on the side of the phone.

The position of the slot is finally more accessable than the ones on  the earlier models. Blackberry can reproduce music and videos, so the extra memory can come in handy. The quality of the music and videos is just average.

The battery is another story. It is excellent. It is a Lithium ion with the capacity of 1400 mAh. It can last for about five hours of talk time, or for about 20 days in standby.

All in all, 8820 model is a great successor of the Blackberry series. It has a very good screen, keyboard, Wi-Fi support, excellent applications, and an incredible battery that just keeps on going.

ADVANTAGES: battery, Wi-Fi, applications
SHORTCOMINGS: no camera, dimensions
